For me, since about the age of 15, I've been aware that implied scariness (so my imagination can get carried away) is by far the scariest. I don't like violent/gorefest films, just no fun, but they don't scare me. But I'm not sure this applies to kids - I saw a film once that was PG and I was terrified at points because I was imagining things - the kids were having a whale of a time. Definitely it applies to some kids, but perhaps most need to have seen more first?!
